Together with collaborators around Europe Kristian Almstrup at ICMM has performed single-nuclei RNA sequencing of all major groups of mammals, including humans as well as their closest relatives, the great apes. This allowed evolutionary mapping of gene expression at the level of individual cells during spermatogenesis.

The results revealed a rapid evolution of spermatogenesis and genes differentially expressed in X- and Y-carrying spermatids.
